Recording of music by Curtis Hughes with Firebird Ensemble:

This CD includes the Firebird's interpretations of three works, including "danger garden," a volatile, colorful instrumental work inspired by botanical experiments gone awry, recently described as a "little winner"in the Boston Globe and as "engagingly lively" in the Boston Phoenix. Also, "The Beck Journals" Volumes 1 and 2, featuring soprano Jennifer Ashe, presents introspective settings of diary entries by the late painter Rosemarie Beck as she copes with the male-dominated New York art world of the 1950s.

The CD also features the expansive textural colors of "Myopia 2" for a virtuoso group of 12 saxophones, and the politically charged intensity of "National Insecurity," composed during the run-up to US military action in Iraq of the past decade.

On February 15, 2013 the Boston Modern Orchestra Project spotlighted the viola in Voilà! Viola! - a concert of five concertos including Donald Crockett’s Viola Concerto featuring soloist Kate Vincent -Artistic Director of Firebird Ensemble. Also featured in this work as members of the concertino group are other Firebird Ensemble musicians - Gabriela Diaz, Rane Moore, Amy Advocat and Rafi Popper-Keizer. Other composers featured on this program include Chen-Yi, Chunary Ung, George Perle and Gordon Jacobs.

The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), the nation’s premier orchestra dedicated exclusively to commissioning, performing, and recording new orchestral music, brings the viola to the forefront in five distinct concertos for viola and large ensemble including a world premiere by Donald Crockett. For this premiere, BMOP will be sharing the stage with Firebird Ensemble’s Boston-based Kate Vincent as soloist. “This concert succeeds at letting the viola glow and giving it an opportunity to show its true, vibrant colors,” explains Gil Rose, Artistic Director and Conductor of BMOP.“And, we’ve rounded up the nation’s crème de la crème of violists to join BMOP for this special concert.”

Commissioned for BMOP by the Jebediah Foundation New Music Commissions (JFNMC), Viola Concerto (2011) by Donald Crockett (b. 1951) is an expansion of the composer’s earlier work entitled “to airy thinness beat” which was written for violist Kate Vincent and her Firebird Ensemble. “The Viola Concerto is a significant addition to the concerto repertoire for the viola,” says Vincent. “It gives the soloist the opportunity to delve deeply into an internal, emotional world while in other parts of the work exploiting the virtuosic, impetuous personality of the instrument.” Based on a poem by John Donne ‘A Valediction Forbidding Mourning’ and an epigraph from the poem, “endure not yet a breach, but an expansion, like gold to airy thinness beat,” Crockett uses this poetic fragment in expressing the musical relationship between the viola and ensemble. BMOP will record this work for a prospective Crockett-centric album to be released on its record label, BMOP/sound.
