Lee Memorial Concert

Thursday, September 25th, 2014 @ 8pm
New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall
30 Gainsborough St. Boston, MA 02115

Composer Lee Hyla taught at New England Conservatory from 1992 through 2007 and was cochair or chair of the composition department for most of that time. This memorial concert brings together performers of Hyla's music who had the opportunity to work with him during his time here. Firebird Ensemble is honored to be a part of this concert in which they will perform Hyla's work, "Field Guide," which was commissioned by the St. Botolph Club and Firebird Ensemble and premiered by Firebird in Jordan Hall in 2006. Members of Firebird will also be performing other chamber works of Hyla's during the program. Firebird is honored to be a part of this concert commemorating the life of such an important and valuable composer to Firebird Ensemble, Boston, and American music.

A new program created by Firebird Ensemble and beginning this season, the Outstanding Young Artists Initiative spotlights outstanding young artists emerging into the new music scene today. At the core of OYAI is an intensive professional collaboration between Firebird Ensemble musicians and a small group of extraordinary young musicians selected each season by Firebird Ensemble. Each OYAI project will culminate in a performance (or series of performances) featuring some of the nation's most talented young performers, composer and ensembles.

All five fellows for our inaugural performance are current students or recent graduates of the University of Southern California.

Eeyore has a Birthday by Jon Deak

in Wilbraham, MA
Wednesday, January 15, 2014
in Arlington, MA
Tuesday, June 10, 2014
in Arlington, MA

This concert program is a thrilling and delightful musical setting of A.A.Milne’s story Eeyore Has a Birthday from the Winnie-the-Pooh series, one of the most delightful literary collections for children. Composed by Jon Deak, each instrument assumes a role in the story; the ever-mournful Eeyore is personified by the viola; the gastronomically oriented Pooh Bear by the double bass; and the eager, bumbling Piglet by the piano. This program is presented in collaboration with Young Audiences of Massachusetts (YAMA) -an organization dedicated to bringing live music to school children in the Greater Boston area.

These performances are private in-school events scheduled through YAMA (Young Audiences of Massachusetts). To make a booking for this programCLICK HERE.

Eric Moe and Firebird Ensemble "Meanwhile Back at the Ranch"

Eric Moe's music has been variously described as "maximal minimalism", "Rachmaninoff in hell", and "music of winning exuberance". Moe's imaginative titles are little stories or images suggestive of parts of innumerable and widely scattered fictions. Many suggest a kind of poignant humor, or an inside joke that he and the listener share: "Meanwhile Back at the Ranch" is one such title, the cliched phrase from which Western movies use to keep the audience from being thrown by a zealous edit. Buy Now!

We just celebrated the release of Firebird Ensemble's newest CD recording featuring the music of ERIC MOE and titled Meanwhile Back at the Ranch onSept. 6th at First Church in Boston! Our special guest artist was ERIC MOE himself, featured composer and pianist, and he also presented an intermission talk about the works on the recording. Thank you for joining!
